Custom mitered end sections – the smart alternative for Walton County

“We love using Hardie® Pipe. It allows us to open our roads back to the public faster than other options have in the past.” Wilmer Stafford, Operations Manager for Walton County.

Project Name: Walton County - Various Projects
Location: Walton County, Florida
Client/Civil Engineer/Civil Contractor: Walton County
Completion Dates: Various, since June 2004
Hardie ® Pipe Used: Various lengths of Classes II, III and IV standard and MES Hardie ® Pipe

Installing cross and side drains can be time consuming for pipe crews as they cut and measure pipes to fit standard mitered end sections (MES). With their heavy commitment to infrastructure works, Walton County seized the opportunity to save significant time and costs by taking a different approach to the installation of MES Walton County now uses custom length MES from Hardie Pipe.

Walton County realized that by installing Hardie Pipe’s custom length MES they would achieve critical time and cost savings on every drainage project. They can install side and cross drains without cutting pipes to achieve the necessary length. This should provide significant savings with the thousands of feet of pipe they install each year.

One notable example of these great savings was seen recently on the Laird Road upgrade project. Walton County engineers worked with Hardie Pipe to determine what custom MES would be the most cost effective option for the project. Walton County determined that by utilizing 2,351ft of Class III Hardie® Pipe, including 116ft MES (in 9ft – 11ft lengths), they would achieve significant savings during the installation of the side and cross drains.

Wilmer Stafford, Operations Manager for Walton County stated, “We love using Hardie® Pipe. It allows us to open our roads back to the public faster than other options have in the past.”

By using the combined installation benefits of 16ft lengths of Hardie® Pipe (compared to 8ft provided with other RCP’s) and the pre-measured MES, Walton County continue to achieve great savings on their projects.

Since June 2004, Walton County has used Hardie® Pipe MES in both standard and custom lengths in many rural projects on county roads.
