Petticoat saves with 600 fewer pipes on Pulaski Road

Petticoat handled 600 fewer pipes, placed and lubricated 600 fewer gaskets, and wrapped 600 fewer joints in filter fabric.

Project Name: Pulaski Road
Location: Pulaski Road, City of Jacksonville, Florida
Client: Petticoat Contracting Inc
Project Cost: $8.9 million
Expected Completion Date: July 2006
Hardie® Pipe Used: 9,616ft of Class III standard Hardie® Pipe

A combination of tight deadlines, existing utilities and on-site storage constraints presented Petticoat Contracting with many challenges. Fortunately their decision to use Hardie® Pipe not only helped them with all of these issues but should enable them to complete the project well ahead of time and budget.

While concrete pipes are all manufactured to the same internal diameter, concrete pipes differ in their outside diameter. This is simply because some concrete pipes need a thicker
wall to meet minimum strength requirements, whereas Hardie® Pipe’s wall is not as thick and still easily meets FDOT strength requirements.

This smaller outside diameter meant Petticoat could work around the existing utilities. “The smaller outside diameter of Hardie® Pipe allowed us to skirt existing utilities, so we could keep progressing with the installation,” said Project Manager for Petticoat Contracting Inc., Clyde Cross.

That time saving was further enhanced by Hardie® Pipe’s 16ft lengths. While other RCP’s are provided in 8ft lengths, Hardie® Pipe’s longer lengths meant Petticoat handled 600 fewer pipes, placed and lubricated 600 fewer gaskets, and wrapped 600 fewer joints in filter fabric. Project Manager, Clyde Cross stated that “As a result of Hardie® Pipe’s design we saved considerable time and money.” The faster installation time will see Petticoat complete their works well ahead of the July 2006 deadline.

Hardie® Pipe’s unique timber crating also enabled safe and efficient on-site storage and shipping, a valuable feature when site storage was limited, as was the case on Pulaski Road.

Hardie Pipe supplied 9,616ft of Class III Hardie® Pipe to Petticoat Contracting. The $8.9m Pulaski Road upgrade in Jacksonville, Florida forms part of the “Better Jacksonville Plan” project and represents a long-awaited improvement to the heavily congested road.
