 | Saltwater Solution for Ocean Way
“Hardie ® Pipe offered a superior solution for Ocean Way’s drainage problem.” Khalilah French, Project Engineer for Keith and Associates Inc.
Project Name: Ocean Way Location: Ocean Way, City of Deerfield Beach, Florida Client: City of Deerfield Beach Civil Engineer: Keith and Associates Incorporated Civil Contractor: Richard Mancini Equipment Company Project Cost: $2 million Completion Date: February 2005 Hardie® Pipe Used: 565ft of Class II standard Hardie® Pipe, 800ft of Class III standard Hardie® Pipe, and 443ft of Class III slotted Hardie® Pipe
Located at City of Deerfield Beach on Florida’s east coast, the stretch of Ocean Way road has been problematic for local residents. With inadequate drainage infrastructure and tidal influences, the coastal road has often been subject to significant flooding across the roadway.
City of Deerfield Beach engaged Civil Engineering firm Keith and Associates Inc. to solve this drainage problem.
While the drainage system itself demanded an increased capacity, it also had to be compatible with the saltwater environment. The original project specification of CMP was subsequently modified by Keith and Associates and upgraded to a specification of Hardie® Pipe.
The unique manufacture of Hardie® Pipe would provide the benefits of RCP but would also perform well in this saltwater environment. The autoclaved chemical structure of Hardie® Pipe, and the absence of steel reinforcement, meant no corrosion, and a good resistance to saltwater and acidic soil attack.
Khalilah French, Project Engineer for Keith and Associates Inc, was impressed with the performance of Hardie® Pipe. “Hardie® Pipe offered a superior solution for Ocean Way’s drainage problem. It gave us the strength and durability of concrete but was also fit for this salt water environment. We got the best of both worlds.” Keith and Associates specified 1,808ft of Class II and slotted Class III Hardie® Pipe for Ocean Way.
