 | Stormwater drainage plans for the new Medical Center at Florida State University posed a problem for engineers. The pipelines ran directly under the existing facility. Since business would continue during construction, Solomon Construction jacked a steel casing into place and sliplined Hardie Pipe. Design specifications called for 36" SRCP through a 56" casing with casing spacers. Hardie Pipe's Territory Manager explained that Hardie's flush exterior pipe does not need spacers. The outside diameter of Hardie Pipe enabled engineers to downsize from 56" to 42" casing. The smaller casing and elimination of spacers allowed for quicker installation as well. A project such as this would typically cost $51,800 with labor, equipment and pipe. Using Hardie Pipe in this situation only cost $33,300. Therefore, savings to the owner were over $18,000, not including decreased labor expenses seen with shorter installation times. | | Pipe installation at Florida State University - School of Medicine
